Theme: Identity

At first you might consider a self-portrait, using the skill builder as a departure point for your work. This is an acceptable way to proceed with the theme project.

But digging deeper, what does identity mean? Think about your cultural identity, your identity within the school, your online identity, spam account(s) and all.

This can be a sculpture or vessel. Carefully consider the larger form and its smaller details. How is it presented? Does it stand on the table top? Does it have its own pedestal? Does it hang on the wall? What are you communicating with the viewer? Use your whole repertoire of art resources: color, line, texture, value, space when creating this artwork.

Research:

Collect images and create drawings of you or symbols you plan to include.  Put drawings in your sketchbook, share images in a blog post.

Challenger level: Are you involving more complicated content by communicating a stance on a contemporary issue? Does YOUR work raise awareness?

Research:

Find at least two artists, they don’t have to be ceramic artists, who create work that is biographical in nature.  In your notebook and blog share an analysis of how they successfully communicate with the viewer.

Construct:

Decide on a method of construction and build your project.

Reflect:

  • Solves problems

What unexpected challenges did you face when building this work?

  • Communicates with others

What details did you include in your work to communicate a mood, feeling or stance with viewers?

  • Observes

What details did you pay careful attention to including or recreating in your artwork?

  • Global Awareness

How does your artwork fit into a bigger conversation about identity?
