Design Challenge: Nesting or stacking forms

img_4952

Read the article in “Pottery Making Illustrated” by Courtney Murphy about how she hand builds nesting forms. Answer questions in from the playlist in your notebook.

  • Complete at least three different sketches in your notebook. Make a maquette to help work through the planning process.
  • Find examples of nesting or stacking forms that are interesting to you, analyze how they work together as a set and individual pieces.
  • Build your forms
  • Spend some time researching examples of how you might create texture and glaze your work. Create test tiles so you are confident in your choices.
  • Reflect on your process, progress and results in your blog.

This does not have to be a vessel project, you could nest or stack a sculpture as well.

How does she use thin cotton in her building process?

What could you use in place of a large plaster mold to form the base of your vessels?

Explain a helpful tip that you learned from this article?

Would you recommend it to a friend? Why or why not?

Plan:

In your notebook sketch three different ideas for nesting or stacking form. Identify areas that require precise pre-planning so they fit together correctly.

Reflect:

  • Explain why pre-planning your specific forms were important.
  • What problem(s) did you encounter or not consider when building your forms?
  • Find a contemporary example of handmade nesting ceramic forms, write an analysis of the artwork.
  • How are you going to glaze/finish your work? Which principle of organization (variety, pattern, balance, dominance, harmony, etc) will you select to visually complete your set?
