Reflection

I have been working to include more student choice in the ceramics classes. Looking back to the fall semester I think this was my most successful attempt at teaching basic handbuilding skills while allowing for more student input. So for the first time, not every student built a coiled bowl or an artwork from an enclosed pinched form.

Ardaisa’s pinch pot from first period.

Alyssa’s coiled bowl from 5th period.

I taught stiff slab and soft slab construction in the same lesson. Some students used a cardboard form to create a cylinder while others used a template to cut and then dry slabs to create a cube. Each student used this slab construction as a canvas to demonstrate practice sgraffito.

During Homecoming week we made use of the abbreviated bell schedule to make “tiny houses,” ornaments to sell as a fundraiser for United for Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria. Students painted them with underglaze and glaze while waiting for their pieces to be fired. They were sold through November and December and raising $646.
